The questions I’m most asked about my painting is, how I achieve
the liveliness in my painting and the color combinations I use. In answer to
those questions, I am a colorist, so I command a diverse palette. I
do not discipline myself to paint the same subject or use the exact
same palette over and over again.
I believe in experimenting and
painting subjects I have a passion for. I am not a thing painter or
a reporter of what I see. I am rather more an interpreter of what I see.
Just as my life is made up of layers of experience and emotion, so
is my artwork an accumulation of colors and textures that interact
with each other.
In Paradise, my first layer was loosely applied to unify - what I refer
to as the underwear. To get the glow I desire I apply yellow in this
first wash as well as preserve my whites. Later I came in with a
more controlled network of brush marks and glazes.
I also
re-establish the darks. I barely mix my colors on the palette and this
helps keep them lively. My basic palette in Paradise was cad. yellow
light, yellow ochre, cobalt blue, manganese,
Winsor green (blue
shade) and permanent rose.
