| Drama, motion and color coupled with good design are key ingredients in
setting the mood of my paintings. I push the realistic subject beyond itself with the
exaggeration of shapes, sizes or color. In painting Brooks, I first pre-wet areas and
let the colors float in and mingle on the surface, next colors were intensified, shapes
delineated and glazes added. Since I like the dramatic I used a spotlight effect on Brooks
to create a strong yet quiet mood. I then masked out and painted around my whites. When I
had finished with my darks, I went back in and added color changes within the whites. I
never hesitate to introduce dramatic change even if I chance ruining the painting.
The number one block to creativity is fear. Fear of ruining a
great start, or eliminating a part of the painting we have fallen in love with often keeps
us from perfecting the overall painting. We need courage to risk and go outside our
comfort zone. Ones life and ones art are strongly connected and the energize each other.
Take the risk; go beyond what the eye sees, to what the creative mind can imagine. Trust
your inner intuition, for our only limits are those we create. |
