The portrait of Andi was done, as per her request, in full sun, because
the day was so cold. The minute she pulled her chair out into the sun I saw something so beautiful that, in truth, I didn't want to paint, but
rather to just sit and look at her, and that was the sunshine caught in the curl of her eyelashes. Andi is African American and her eyelashes,
as dictated by genes are thick and curled.
I paint very rapidly in transparent watercolors and with me painting is really a hand/ eye operation, that is, I'm entirely in the right
hemisphere and have no words to think with. However, on that particular minute, just before putting paint to paper,
I realized that I'd have to paint fast, wet and dark around the eyes and still let the
sunshine in the curl of her lashes show.
I did it. I was euphoric. |
