Susie Short -- Christmas Card Demo

Scraped and Scratched Trees

(Using pre-packaged greeting cards or 140# watercolor paper)

Step 1: Wet the surface down to where you want the snow edge to be.

Step 2: "Drop" color into the wet area.

Step 3: While it is still wet, you can scratch twigs or small branches in the wet areas with a toothpick. The paint will settle into those scratches.

Step 4: As the paint starts to dry but is still damp, (loosing its shine) gently scrape the paint off the surface. I used a credit card. Palette knives, slanted end watercolor brushes, and even acrylic fingernails can be used.

Step 5: When completely dry add some dry brush details; the darker bark, and more branches. The shadows add drama and interest.

Below are some additional examples of Christmas Cards made with a scraping technique.

Tip: Try painting a series of several cards at in an assembly line fashion. Allow one card to dry while you work on the next. By not rinsing your brush as often you will save paint and time. No two cards will be alike.

Have fun and enjoy painting!  Happy Holidays!    -- Susie
