This is My Best!

Susie Short Watercolor Workshops

I love to paint flowers! I think it must go back to my younger years being the daughter of a floral designer who worked in the only flower shop in a small town. One of my first jobs was in that flower shop putting away the flowers when they were delivered.  Today, I enjoy growing my own "live models" to work from.
"White Elegance" (22" x 30") was painted after photo shoot and visit to the San Antonio Botanical Garden's in San Antonio, Texas. I was fascinated by the backlighting on these white Cattleya orchids. There was such a dramatic contrast between the darker background and the luminous ruffled edges on the orchids. I found painting the lacy translucent petals in creamy shades of white to be intriguing.

Most of my paintings are started with a wet-in-wet underpainting in which I allow the colors to "mingle."  Then from this limited controlled beginning, I glazed additional layers of these transparent, almost pearl-like, colors of white. The drama and volume was turned up when I painted the rich jewel tones of green, navy, and magenta in the background.
This painting was one of those that just worked. From beginning to end it only took about 6 hours to paint. It is now in a private collection.
