$1000 Fine
by Penny Soto

Ever wonder "what the heck am I going to do with the background?" Do you ever get so excited with painting the subject matter that you "forget" to even think about the background?

This happened in my painting "$1000 Fine. I was so excited about painting the California State Poppies (you get a $1,000 fine if you pick them) that I just wanted to put down the color and vibrancy on my watercolor paper that Isaw.

Let's make it clear from the start, I think you should definitely plan out your painting, but sometimes in an artist's life that just doesn't happen. Especially when you are first beginning to paint. Or sometimes, you just can't think of a background that will compliment the subject matter. It's easy to get so overwhelmed with a subject and not "plan out" the composition, design and background.

Well, in this lesson we will learn how to paint "Direct Flat Field Washes", so you never have to worry about backgrounds again. In "$1000 Fine", I used transparent Blue-green colors, to give it a soft look and still push it back, and compliment the Orange colors.
