to Watercolor Morning Glory Blues

Now that we have painted our
“Direct Flat Field Wash”, it’s time to have some fun!
We will go back into the 60’s and do a psychedelic painting!
But instead of being “uncontrolled” we will be “controlled!
We will paint only the background and the leaves for this
lesson.
The
first thing you may want to do is practice your color
to color to color technique, except
a little darker color change as we go down the photograph into the
shadows. But only one step change in value will be fine. You can find
the instructions in the “Pears and Lace” lesson.
The key to having a
nice color change is to use all the same values of color. In the first
photograph I have used (left to right) Lemon Yellow to New Gambouge to
Alizarin to Windsor Violet to Permanent Rose. Essentially Warm
to Cool. |

If you paint one color and make the next one darker,
it won’t be a nice transition of color, you will have a line in it,
showing the differences of values. Again, we want all the same value for
this technique. You should be able to see a little of your pencil line,
so you know where you are going with it. We will “lift out” the
highlight later on.
In this photo, I have concentrated on
using some “high intensity” colors on the “light side” of the
leaves. |
