Penny Soto's Steps to Watercolor
Sedimentary and Transparent Colors

Introduction to Lesson #4: Over painting

First off we want the pot to have some “texture”. One good way of making that is to use Sedimentary colors.

Experiment with these colors first. Wet your paper, wait till the sheen is off, then “drop in” some sedimentary colors. Watch what they do. Turn your paper up and sideways to let the colors flow together. Try Daniel Smith Lunar Earth and Cobalt Violet and Manganese first. It is amazing what Lunar Earth does!

Then paint direct with those colors. Mix the colors together in your palette and paint on dry paper.

Study that.

You can also move your paper around.

The first thing you should be aware of is the color temperature and properties of your pigments. We under painted with intense colors in our last lesson and this is just a prerequisite for lesson number 4 “Over Painting the Pot of Flowers.

Take some Sedimentary colors and practice first before you put them on your painting. This will give you a good insight of just what will happen when you are using Sedimentary Colors!

Some of the Sedimentary colors are: French Ultra Marine Blue, Cobalt Violet, Lunar Earth, Manganese Blue, Cobalt Blue, and Ultra Marine Turquoise

These are just a few that I use. Now that you know what to expect. Take a black WATER PROOF marker and draw 2 long lines Horizontally about 1” wide. Take each one of your colors and paint across the line. The ones that sit up on the black line are OPAQUE and the ones that “hide behind” the line are transparent.

Practice a little first with your Sedimentary colors, then in our next lesson we will put them to work!

Happy Painting

Note:  Penny was unable to finish lesson #4, but promises to do it soon!
