Penny Soto's Steps to Watercolor

Lace - The Easy & Fun Way!

Lesson #1, Page 3

Let’s start by practicing on a sheet of scrap paper. Take an extra piece of the lace material and lay it down on the scrap paper. Tape the ends with drafting tape so the lace won’t move.

Mix up a little bit of pigment or pigments.  II am mixing up a small squirt bottle of just Indigo and add ¾ of water to the bottle. (Small bottle). Shake it up very well or stir it up, and test the value on a piece of paper. It should be a number 6-to 8 o the value scale.

We want it on the dark side or it will not even show the pattern of the lace. This is the “tricky” part. You don’t want it “thick”, but you do want it dark. So you will have to alter the pigment ratio to the water so you will get it dark but still transparent.

Once you have accomplished this, take the bottle and hold it about 10 inches away from your paper and lace. Use one hand with the glove on and one hand to press the bottle. Now “spray” the entire surface. Try NOT to move the lace. If you need to tape it down more, do that.  Try to spray it thoroughly, only once.

Now GENTLY remove the lace material without sliding it on your paper. When you pick it up, it should have a beautiful imprint of the pattern of the lace. Practice some more and when you feel you have it, you can do the same on your “real painting”!

If you want “folds” in the lace, pleat it at the top, but still tape it down. Later you can go back in and paint the shadows in where the folds are.

This is an effective way to paint the pattern of lace without painting every lace whole and pattern. If you have an airbrush, you are welcome to do it that way also. If you don’t, then just use a spray bottle. But don’t forget to tell your viewers, that you “DID” paint every little nook and cranny!………..and then watch their faces!!!

Next lesson we will paint the pot and flowers with “sedimentary pigments”. Until then, Happy Painting!
