Penny Soto's Steps to Watercolor

Lace - The Fun & Easy Way!

Lesson #1, Page 2

Draw in your window sill and  clay pot and plant. Draw any plant you like, it doesn’t have to look like this one. Make sure you draw it with dark graphite, and no detail. If you like you can just draw in the outline.

Now take masking fluid and "paint" in the plant and pot only. The correct way to use the masking fluid is to wet your brush first and then add a thick solution of soap to it. Make sure you use an old brush because you won’t be able to use that brush again on your watercolor painting. Wash it out as soon as you are finished.

Take the drafting tape and tape off the windowsill so it is covered. Now you have the pot, flowers and window still covered up. So what’s open to paint is the lace part of the painting.

Remember, you must wait for it to dry thoroughly before using any paint or water on the paper! When you have completed painting the areas around what you were protecting (see next lesson), gently remove the frisket with your finger or a rubber cement pick-up.  Carefully lift the masking tape.  You are then ready to paint the areas you have protected.
